CO-HEIRS
WITH CHRIST
- By

“The
Spirit Himself and our spirit bear united witness that we are
children of God. And if we are children, we are heirs as
well; heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, sharing His
sufferings so as to share in His glory.” Romans 8:16-17

-
We know that
as children, we are expected
to
live a life according to the Gospel of the Lord. This means
that we have to live in righteousness and holiness. This is
our obligation as a child of God. But quite often, it is
rarely taught what it means to be a child of God?
-
-
As a child
of God, we have the same rights as Jesus did. We can seek an
audience with God. We can call Him 'Abba, Father.' We are
entitled to what the Father gave to Jesus. He did not keep
anything from His Son. As such, the Father also gives us
everything through Jesus.
What does all this mean? As a child of God, we are entitled
to receive help from our Heavenly Father when we need it. As a
child of God, He has to listen to us. Most importantly, as St.
Faustina said in her diary, the sinner has the right to the
Mercy of God. The greater the sinner, the greater is the right
to the Mercy of God.

The past
year was very hard for my family. There were times when my
prayer was so dry that I felt that the Lord has abandoned me.
And this scared me more than anything else - that God has
abandoned me and was punishing me for making the wrong
decision. I felt so helpless and hopeless.
-
-
Even the
repeated assurance of my confessor was no help. But because
this came from his lips, I had to take it in faith that the
Lord was speaking through him.
-
-
It was
probably at the darkest night of my prayer life that I had two
realizations. First, God was not punishing me for making a
wrong decision. I have confessed my sins and so He has
forgiven me. Second, God is faithful. And because He
promised it, He will do it. He said that He hears our
prayers. He said that He knows His plans for us. He said that
He would provide for our needs. So, even if I did not feel
Him, even if I felt that He has abandoned me, in truth, He has
NOT! Because He promised that He will NEVER leave us
nor forsake us.
-
-
I had to
repeatedly force myself to believe in these facts. Once I
believed, the darkness lifted, and indeed, the Lord finally
answered my prayers.
-
-
One thing I
learned from this darkness is that what scares me most is not
losing money - but it is losing God. Because if I lose money,
God can give it back. But if I lose God, then I lose my life.
