THE
LEGACY
- By

- Some would rely on their
power,
- Others put trust on
their gold.
- Some have only their
Savior…

I could
not forget these beautiful lines from the song “All That We
Have.” True enough some have only Jesus Christ in their
lives. But they are the wealthiest, and they end up happier
and at peace in their lives.

When you
know and believe in Christ, our Savior, you would know the
legacy that He had left behind. Oftentimes, I tell a small
child complaining of his predicament, whether of being sick
or not being able to do something because of his limitations,
that in fact he is a lot luckier. Jesus died on the Cross for
us. Imagine that sacrifice! His tremendous suffering is
incomparable to the trials that these little children
encounter; in the same way, we, adults, should not also be so
burdened by the thought of the trials that come our way.

This
legacy that I mentioned is confirmed in Matthew 20:26-28, “Whoever
wants to become great among you must be your servant, and
whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son
of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give
His life as a ransom for many.”

We try
to follow Christ’s footsteps. His life has become a legacy
more valuable than “power and gold”. But are we on the right
tract? Sometimes, just as when we thought we are living our
life according to the teachings of Jesus Christ, we find
ourselves with some stumbling blocks just like in the Parable
of The Rich Young Man. In Matthew 19:23-24, Jesus said to his
disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man
to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again, I tell you, it is
easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than
for a rich man to enter the
kingdom
of God.”
And then in Matthew 19:29-30, Jesus said to them, “And
everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or
father, or mother, or children, or fields, for my sake, will
receive a hundred times as much, and will inherit eternal
life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are
last will be first.”

I still
remember how over a great trial, years ago, I used to carry
inspirational books to read by my husband’s sick bed hoping to
gain strength and drive away the depression that I felt. I
even asked for discernment from God by leading me to something
uplifting from the book. Then this woman, who I look up to
till now, asked me, “What is that you are carrying?” I showed
her my book and I noticed that what she was carrying with her
is a Bible – the book, which contains all of Christ’s life,
His legacy.
-
-
That was
the turning point in the practice of my faith, in my search
for Jesus Christ in my life. I am still searching. I know it
is still a long journey; but I am striving, in the hope that
the wealth that I find in knowing Him, I would be able
to impart to others in their time of need… just like the woman
carrying the Bible.

Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, left us a legacy by
the example of His life. For our part, what legacy are we
going to leave behind?
