Fr. Harold Toledano, OADBEING RICH IN CHRIST
By Fr. Harold Toledano, OAD

Nothing should trouble you, nothing should frighten you; he who has God lacks nothing, only God is enough.

These are consoling words written by St. Therese of Avila based on her personal and mystical experience with the Lord. This is to affirm that it really does not matter much to talk about God.  Rather, the most important thing is to talk with God.

Professing Christ as our wealth should mean recognizing our poverty and experiencing the richness of the Lord. In our humanity, we are poor. We are just creatures, temporal and finite.  But this poverty became a blessing when the Lord Jesus Christ lived and shared of it through His incarnation. By His assumption of our mortal nature, He had let us feel His presence among us as the Emmanuel-God with us. He shared all our ups and downs, and He has raised us to the highest dignity as Children of God when He poured out His precious blood on the Cross for our redemption. By His death, He also gave us the possibility to share God’s divine life.

The Father knows that our human nature is weak and poor because of our free will, though we know He has created us in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27)

and has breathed on us His divine life (Genesis 2:7). So when we fell into sin, He has sent us the most precious gift He Himself possesses: Jesus Christ, His Only Begotten Son, so that we may receive through Him every spiritual blessing in the heavens and on the earth.

In Christ, therefore, we are rich because, though creatures, we receive the Creator; though sinners, we receive the Savior; though poor and needy, we receive the Giver of gifts; though slaves, we are freed; though servants, we become friends; though human, we become divine; though unworthy, we are justified; lost, and we found a Shepherd; though hungry, we are fed with the food of the angels; dead by sin, and we are restored to life; and, though strangers, we become God’s children.

John 3:16 is enough to let us be certain that Christ is truly our wealth:

GOD – the greatest LOVER
SO LOVED – the greatest DEGREE
THE WORLD – the greatest COMPANY
THAT HE GAVE - the greatest ACT
HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON – the greatest GIFT
THAT WHOEVER – the greatest OPPORTUNITY
BELIEVES – the greatest SIMPLICITY
IN HIM – the greatest ATTRACTION
SHOULD NOT PERISH  - the greatest PROMISE
BUT – the greatest DIFFERENCE
HAVE – the greatest CERTAINTY
ETERNAL LIFE. – the greatest POSSESSION

Having Christ as our wealth, we are reminded by Mother Teresa, when in one of her retreats given to priests and bishops, she said: “Give Christ, always Christ, and only Christ.” This is a call for each one of us who are enriched by Christ to enrich other people’s lives, too.
