Liza CaledaA Family that lived happily ever after? No Way! - By Liza Caleda

I’ve always been a hopeless romantic.  You know, the kind that would always have...and they lived happily ever after as an ending to every story told, to every book written and to every movie watched.
Benny Caleda
And so it goes, that when Benny and I first met, I knew he was the guy I was going to marry and build a family with and live happily ever after.

Wow a family!  I would have this fairytale spun in my mind about DAD, MOM and then PERFECT KIDS without really knowing that raising up a family is not just giving birth and then, they lived happily ever after.

NowBenny & Liza's children: BENJAMIN, KARA and BRIAN fast forward to 28 years later after Benny and I met.  With Brian,(22), Jammy (18) and Kara (14years) in tow, a family indeed.  But the years in between had been a testimony of God’s many miracles in helping Benny and I raise up not a fairytale family, not a perfect family but one with all it’s imperfections sprinkled with God’s mercy and constant guidance. Like the time when Brian was a sophomore and he tried to sneak out on us in the night only to be caught immediately.   But because we have always been praying for our children, God in HIS infinite mercy made a way for us to catch him before it became  a regular habit.  Imagine, his first try and right away he got caught.  Well, he was pitted against a GOD who cared a lot. for him.

Each family is unique. Each child is different and so with each child there were adjustments that we had to do in order to guide them to be God loving and God fearing kids.  There were many trials and errors but in each mistake, there were lessons learned.

In our journey in raising up the family, we have learned that DISCIPLINE strengthened with FAMILY PRAYERS, COMPASSION FOR OTHERS AND LOVE had been the most important ingredients that helped us to let go of Brian and Jammy.

We know that they are well equipped to weather problems that they will encounter now that they are away from home and are in the university.  It was and still is difficult for us especially for Kara who has a very special bond with her brothers but by God’s grace and knowing that they have God in their hearts, Benny and I are confident that these jewels lent to us will have a foundation that will help them build a family of their own.  We as parents often times wonder if the values we impart our children will leave their imprints on them.  Take heart, in Romans 8:28, my favorite verse it says, “God will make things work out for those who love HIM and are called to do HIS will” Brian, at 22 still goes to church every Sunday on his own without being pressured and this in spite of being around friends that would tease him about going to church. Jammy now is a member of TEENLIFE a church based prayer group for teens. And to think that having them attend CCD while they were here in Jakarta was a big challenge for us. Raising up these kids was a roller coaster of love, discipline, crying and bargaining but in the end the LORD made it all work out and HE continues to do so.

In closing, let me encourage you to call upon the CREATOR of our little ones to help raise up these children and be a family that will be pleasing to him.  Not a perfect one, but one that will testify to HIS desire to make our families for HIM and I know that though our family will not live happily ever after here, but I am confident that GOD will guide us in coming close to it.
