Last
October 16, 2002, the beginning of the 25th year of his
Pontificate, Pope John Paul II, signed an Apostolic Letter called
Rosarium Virginis Mariae (Rosary of the Virgin Mary).
In this
Letter, the Holy Father proclaimed the year from October 2002 to October
2003 the Year of the Rosary and proposed the addition of the Mysteries
of Light (the mysteries of Christ’s public ministry between His
Baptism and His passion) to the traditional pattern of the Rosary.
He is also encouraging all people to rediscover the beauty and power of
the Rosary as a prayer, especially for peace and for the strengthening
of the family.
We all
know how important a family is, being the basic structure of society.
Strong families mean strong citizenship and therefore a strong nation.
Godly families make Godly citizens and a Godly nation. That is why; the
family is under attack from the enemy on all fronts trying to weaken and
break it down. Even wealth, if not used properly, can sometimes destroy
families and family values. Not to mention drugs, alcoholism,
immorality, gambling and other vices.
And not
surprisingly, one of the important highlights of the new Apostolic
Letter is the Pope’s call for families to pray the Rosary together. He
pointed out one of the sad realities in our modern world today,
“Families seldom manage to come together, and the rare occasions when
they do are often taken up with watching television”.
“To pray
the Rosary for children, and even more, with children,
training them from their earliest years to experience this daily “pause
for prayer” with the family, is admittedly not the solution to every
problem, but it is a spiritual aid which should not be underestimated”
the Pope wrote in His Letter.
How true
indeed! Because for me, if there is one thing that I still clearly
remember from my childhood it is the times when we prayed the Rosary
together as a family with my grandparents and aunties and uncles. And I
know that many of you have the same experience.
To bring
up kids in a prayerful family is, I believe, one of the greatest gifts
that parents can give to their children. And this gift can never be
equaled by nor be measured in terms of any material or earthly
possession or wealth.
Let us
therefore heed the Holy Father’s call and begin to pray together as a
family everyday until it becomes an important part of our family life
and until our family becomes “a family that prays together stays
together” family.
