Sansu GarinTHE VICTORY
By Sansu Garin

“We had hoped that He would redeem Israel” lamented the two  disciples who were on their way back to their village, Emmaus, on the day of the Resurrection. We read their story in Luke 24:13-35; that Jesus appeared to them on the road but they did not recognize Him. Their eyes were rendered blind by hopelessness because the man they thought would liberate them instead died in the hands of their oppressors.

As the story goes, Jesus walked with them; in the process talking about everything that had happened in the light of the Scripture.  Jesus stayed with them and broke bread with them. “Then their eyes were opeThe Victoryned and they recognized Him” (Luke 24:31).  Like the last piece of a puzzle falling into place, all became clear. The light of understanding flashed and everything took meaning.  Glorious… Beautiful…

More than what the two disciples had hoped for, our Lord Jesus Christ redeemed not only Israel but the whole of mankind. That first Easter morning marked the dawning of mans’ salvation. The Risen Christ, the Light of the world, illuminated our darkness and triumphed in victory against our bondage of sin and death!

Christ’s tomb must have been a beautiful sight to behold.  With  the  stone rolled away from the entrance, radiance came not from the light of day into the tomb, but rather, from the tomb of the Risen Christ, beaming light to the outside world.

Like the two disciples, we too shall experience the same joy and knowledge of God when we seek Him in the daily Scripture and partake in the celebration of the  Eucharist. That with Jesus, we, too, will find meaning in our lives.

And as believers of the Risen Christ, let us be bearers of light to others.  In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus said, “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

One year this Easter, I was blessed to be part of not one but two adult baptisms.  Two colleague-friends who decided to embrace our Catholic faith requested me to serve as their principal witness.  As one born into the faith (i.e., easy admission to the Church), I was humbled when I learned about the preparations they had to go through to become Catholics.  As adult converts, it takes firm commitment and dedication to complete at least a yearlong unlearning and learning process. It requires a lot of courage leaving behind an old life and embracing a new one in Christ.  I still recall seeing rows and rows of mostly adult converts during that solemn Easter Vigil celebration.  I felt deep joy in my heart at the sight of a concrete testament to the victory of Christ - people believing… people converting.  Once again, the Light of the Risen Christ shone.  Resplendent… Perfect.

After the “extraordinary” activities we had during the Easter Triduum, we move on with our “ordinary” lives.  But let’s pray for the grace not go back to our Emmaus - our old lives.  Instead, may we embrace a renewed life with the Resurrected Christ.  May we be light to others and strive to make the victory in God’s work of salvation live on.

All Glory to the Risen Christ!
