THE
DESIRE
- By Sansu Garin
-
- In her
Magnificat, Mother Mary said, “All generations will call me
blessed…” Indeed, from age to age, the Blessed Virgin Mary is not
only called blessed but is honored with quite a number of other titles
as well. These titles range from biblical designations, those related to
the Church dogmas, or linked to devotional practices and miracles to a
whole lot more from long-established tradition.
-

- More than just
mere titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary, these names reflect the many
roles she actually serves and fulfills in our Christian lives.
Foremost of all, the Church honors her as the Mother of God. We find in
Colossians 1:18 that Jesus Christ is the Head of the body, the Church.
We are His body; so it becomes inseparable to acknowledge Mary, the
Mother of God, as the Mother of the Church.
-
- These titles and
names we call our Mother Mary are also our ways of defining her
characteristics, her personality, in order that we can relate to her
in a more intimate and familiar manner, as her children.
-
- Mother Mary is so
much an integral part of my spirituality. I realized it once again as I
write this article while being undeniably sick.
-
- Just like any sick
child (regardless of age), there’s nothing I wanted more than to have my
mother at my side. My wish is not entirely impossible but it’s not
really very practical, my mother being miles away in the Philippines.
Besides, it’s not as if I don’t have my mother with me. I have our
Mother Mary, the “Comforter of the Afflicted,” who keeps me company.
She is the “Mediatrix of Graces” who intercedes for me for healing from
the Divine Healer. And Mother Mary, the “Queen of Angels,” brought me
angels in the sister who took care of my due credit card bills (nah, she
didn’t pay for it with her money, though I know she won’t think twice,
but volunteered to do the banking transactions for me), the sister who
generously supplied me with strength-restoring food all throughout the
time I was ill in bed and another sister who sent her car to bring me to
the doctor! At night, while floating in and out of fevered sleep, I
rest assured with the “Holy Protection of the Mother of God.” And
knowing my mother in the Philippines, she’d be praying for me to Mother
Mary, the “Health of the Sick.” I am sure you too have your own account
of Mother Mary’s special place in your life.
-
- Mother Mary comes
to each one of us in all or in any one of her various roles - our
Advocate, our Helper, our Benefactress and our Mediatrix. But all for
one and the same purpose. And that is to bring us closer to her Son
Jesus Christ. Her role in the Church is irrevocably entwined with her
union with her Son. She is our mother as much as she is the Mother of
God. And she continues to carry out her part in the salvation of man,
long after she said “Yes” at the Annunciation. Being the mother she is,
she will see to fruition her one utmost desire - to have all her
children united together in God. To this end, let me paraphrase the
words of her Son Jesus to each one of us:
Brother, sister…here is our mother. Heed her…

- O Most Blessed
Mother Mary, pray for us always!
- TELL US LIKE IT IS!
- Has something
wonderful and unique happened in your life lately? Did God answer your
prayer in a very unexpected way? Did you, like Isaiah, meet God’s
whisper?
- Have you felt His
powerful hand working in your life recently?
- Everyday, people are
experiencing God’s mighty Word in their lives and it is a pity that very
few know about it. Do you have a story to tell? Some Good News to
share?
- E-mail us (genesis@catholic.org) or fax us
(021-6627384), and tell us about it. That’s right! You don’t have to be
a great writer to do this. We can help you write it – just tell us like
it is!
- Don’t forget to write
the subject: “Let Me Tell You A
Story”
Please take a
moment to sign our guestbook.
