THE
HANDMAID OF THE LORD
- By Leslie Freires
-
The month of May is once again here for us to give honor to
our beloved Mother Mary. Truly, we honor her as the woman who “made the
Word become flesh” possible with God’s grace. In all reality, Mary was
first of all a servant of God. Did Mary ever think that her “yes” would
change the course of salvation history? She was so absorbed and focused on
doing God’s will in her life that it did not worry her what it really
meant then. Perhaps in her heart, doing God’s will is the be-all and
end-all of her life.
Then Mary said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it
be done
to
me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38) As the Christian Community Bible
commentary states, “In saying this, Mary does not lower herself with false
humility, instead she expresses her faith and her surrender. From her will
be born the one who will be both the servant announced by the
prophets and the only Son.”
Clearly, Mary was at the disposal of God. She was all
giving and totally immersed in God’s will in her life. Meditating on her
will to follow God, can we ever say to our God the same “yes” in the
present time given the same or similar calling?
Can we honestly say that we trust God in all the trials and
difficulties that come our way?
“Grace
is what we call the power God has, to heal our spirit, to instill in us
the disposition to believe and to make us resonate with the truth so that
the expression of real love comes from us in a spontaneous way. We call
grace that which came from the living God to blossom on earth. Mary is
really full of grace because Jesus was born of her as He is born
of the Father. This is why the Church believes that Mary has a unique
role in the work of our salvation. She is the marvel that God achieved at
the outset of transforming humankind into His image,” as the commentary
stresses.
Let us once again
meditate on the way God has chosen her to be the Mother of our Lord Jesus
Christ. In all humility, Mary submitted to God the essence of her being a
servant - that is giving her whole life to God. We may well learn a lesson
and model our lives to her as we daily surrender our will to God in the
call for humility, the call for total submission, the call for faith
and surrender.
Mary said in Luke 1:46-49 “My soul
proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my Savior! He
has looked upon His servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call
me blessed. The mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is His
Name!”
Mary is truly a servant, the chosen one of God who He saw
fit to be the Mother of His only Son. Let us once again give glory to God
for giving us a mother in her and pray that we may be more like her, a
servant!
