HIS Servant
-
MARY, SERVANT OF GOD

Just like our Lord Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin
Mary is a model of servanthood for all of us. She is both a servant
of God and a servant for others.
In the Annunciation, Mary humbly gave her ‘Yes’ to God
thru the angel Gabriel. In doing so, she became God’s servant. She
forgot all about herself, her reputation, even the possible
humiliation and condemnation by her family, relatives
and neighbors. Because God’s work of salvation for mankind was more
important than her own concerns.
In the Visitation, she became a servant for others when
she went to the Hills of Judah to help her cousin Elizabeth, who was
pregnant with John the Baptist. She traveled miles ‘in haste,’ again
forgetting her own concerns for she too was pregnant at that time.
For three months, she stayed with Elizabeth, helping and serving her
needs.
She humbly accepted her role as the mother of the
Child, who “will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel
and who shall stand as a sign of contradiction,” even if “a sword will
pierce her own soul.”
At the wedding at Cana in Galilee, she did not just
come as a guest. She must have helped and served during the feast for
she knew that “they ran out of wine.” She even saved the family of
the groom from embarrassment and interceded for them, which caused
Jesus to perform His very first miracle.
At the foot of the Cross, despite seeing her Son
suffering, she willingly became the Mother of all people w hen Jesus said
to her, “Woman, behold your son.” Thus, she became the servant of all
of God’s children.
And even now that she is in Heaven, she continues to
serve us – the servant of God and the servant for others. She keeps
on interceding for us and for our needs to her Son Jesus Christ. She
remains our powerful ally and intercessor in Heaven. And she is more
than happy to help us for she is a Mother who intercedes
for her children.
Let us therefore imitate our Blessed Mother when we
serve. Let us pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that our
service to God and to others will be like hers. That our service will
all be done out of our love and obedience to God and our love for our
neighbor. That, just like Mary, we will continue to serve God and
others even if it will inconvenience us, make us forget about our own
concerns or give up some of our comforts and perhaps even suffer a
bit. To be able to humbly serve, not for any ‘vainglory’ but for
God’s Glory. Amen!
