INSPIRED BY MOTHER MARY

There
are many devotions and prayers addressed to our Blessed Virgin Mother
but none, in my view, is so powerful as the Holy Rosary. We have
heard so many stories of how petitions were answered, lives were
changed, battles were won, and history was changed because of the
recitation of the Holy Rosary. We also believe that faith can move
mountains. And if we believe that the intercession of the Blessed
Mother would change the situation we are praying for, then it
certainly would.
Our
Mother Mary wishes that we are in constant union with Jes us
Christ. As a mother, she brings her Son Jesus into our midst, into
our lives, into our hearts, into our souls. What a wonderful
experience it is to be led by our Blessed Mother to her Son, not for
herself but for our sake.
If we
are inspired by Mother Mary's example, we should do our best
to bring our children closer to her and to Jesus Christ. If we have
to do it by devotions to the Blessed Mother Mary or recitation of the
Holy Rosary, then we should act on it now. Of course, our good
examples, like Mother Mary, matter most to our children because they
can be inspired by what we do.
Years
back, on one particular New Year's eve, my children and I visited
the Cathedral in Central Jakarta. After a short prayer
in the Cathedral, we proceeded to the store selling religious
artifacts. The children, by themselves, bought a few articles and
statues they wanted. But when it came to Mother Mary's image, we have
to come to a common decision. One of my children wanted the tallest
image of Mother Mary; the other wanted the smaller one, while I wanted
the most beautiful statue of the Blessed Mother. We eventually agreed
on one, which we gave as a gift to their father (my husband) who came
home late from work that day. What we brought home that day still
stands on our altar today.
The
late Fr. Ben Prado, SVD, was very much inspired by our Mother Mary in
his daily recitation of the Holy Rosary. He is remembered well for
having prayed the Rosary for the intentions of other people and his
parishioners. But none struck us most than how his own mother, a
devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary, had asked for a priest son in her
daily prayers. Later, not only was her mother granted a priest son,
but several, including a nun. What a beautiful story indeed, making
other people, including myself, want to have a priest son as well,
through the intercession of the Blessed Mother.
In the
prayer "The Memorare," we are inspired to have confidence in our
Blessed Virgin Mother. The prayer goes: “never was it known that
anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought
your intercession was left unaided.” As I have mentioned
in the beginning of this article, and I reiterate, if we believe
in this, nothing is impossible and the Blessed Mother Mary will truly
intercede for us. Amen.
