THE
PILGRIM

At a Confirmation rite, as the boy receives the seal of God
by way of the anointing with the oil of chrism, he remembered
his dream the night before, when…
-

-
One summer morning, a precocious boy announced to his
mother, “I am going out to seek the Third Person of the Holy
Trinity. I love the Father and the Son is my best friend. But
the Holy Spirit, I still have to know and find.” The concerned
mother hesitantly told her son, “Okay, but be careful. And
better be back home before it gets too dark.”
-
-
And so, like a crusader on a holy quest, the brave boy,
complete with his day’s provisions, went on his way. Pearly
white clouds flitting by the bright rays of light in the
morning sky completed the breathtaking scenery of the places
he went through. Alternately walking and running, he passed by
rolling plains and deep valleys, noting that the hot summer
sun is slowly taking its toll on the land. The lush green
meadow is now broken by brown patches of arid land, baked open
by the long summer heat.
-
-
Eventually, he came to a beautiful lake with crystal clear
waters reflecting the surrounding landscape. Settling down
along its banks, he rested. Gingerly leaning toward the water,
he idly traced with his fingers the mirrored panorama on the
surface of the lake. After a while, he laid on his back under
a shady old tree. He felt refreshed by the gentle breath of
cool air that teasingly played with his hair. Fully recharged,
he hiked on. Up and down, he plodded on until he reached the
top of a hill. Gazing back towards the outlying plains and
valleys he traversed early on the day, he was surprised to see
that the clouds there have turned dark and heavy with
moisture. A few minutes later, the clouds broke
and life-giving rain gushed forth.
-
-
In the distant horizon on the opposite direction, he again
spotted dark clouds. Looking more intently, he saw that it’s
actually smoke spiraling up to the sky from a forest fire.
He trembled with fear at the thought that the fire could rage
on and totally change the landscape.
-
-
Along the way, the boy met an old man who asked him what he
was about. Upon hearing the young pilgrim’s reply, the old
man, face creased with a wise smile, said, “My boy, I hope you
found what you were searching for. But I’ll let you in a
secret. Don’t forget to look inside of you.” With that, the
old man lifted his hands and bid the boy a safe way home. The
tired boy headed back for it was then getting late. Out of
the blue, a lovely white dove flew alongside him lifting up
his spirits. Joyfully, he trudged on toward home.
-
-
At long last, safely home, fed and warmly tucked in bed,
the boy answered his mother’s question on whether or not he
found what he was looking for. He said,
-
-
“I sure found the Holy Spirit, Mother. I was spellbound
with His glory in the magnificent clouds fluttering against
the dazzling light. Then I became aware of His gentle presence
at the lake, as I marveled at the resplendent reflection
created by the very finger of God. He was also in the water
that poured new life to the parched lands. His power, I felt
strongly in the fire that transformed the mountains beyond.
His wisdom, I gleaned from the old man, who told me that the
Holy Spirit is also inside me. And when the old man laid his
hands on me in blessing, I was filled with His holy presence.
Finally, the white dove that flew with me home…ahhh, it
brought me His peace.”
-
-
Then in a sleepy whisper, he added before closing his
eyes,
-
-
“Tomorrow, when I receive the Sacrament of Confirmation,
I shall be one with the Holy Spirit.”
