ARTISAN
OF GOD'S WORKS

The Holy Spirit is the personified Power of God at work in
the world, especially in the Church. In the very beginning,
God’s Spirit created the universe out of nothing. Until now,
He goes on preserving, ruling, animating, teaching and
sanctifying the world towards its final end. He unites what
is separated. He brings back what has gone astray.
He replaces hatred and violence with love and peace.
He renovates and repairs what has been harmed by evil. He is
the dynamic force behind the history of mankind and the life
of each individual. He inspires the Church, teaches and
protects her. He is like the wind unseen, yet to be known
from His effects.

The very first sentence of the book of Genesis mentions
Him.
In mythological language, however not to be misunderstood even
by less educated people, it is said: “In the beginning,
God created the universe. The earth was formless and
desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was
engulfed in total darkness, and the POWER OF GOD was moving
over the water” (Genesis 1:1-2). His touch shaped what was
shapeless, and filled what was void. He founded the laws of
nature. He set into motion a process, that much later would
be called “evolution”. The touch of the Spirit had above all
to do with the creation of “man”, who would be conscious of
his environment and individual existence, and would wonder and
ask himself questions such as “from whom?” and “what for?”
The creation of the universe was conducive to the creation of
man. The existence of a universe would be meaningless, if for
example, the sun and stars would be there only to be burnt out
in time and disappear.
-
-
Before the creation of man, God, in His Power, spoke the
words “Fiat Lux” or “May there be light…” (Genesis 1:3). Yet,
a mere physically illuminated universe would remain senseless,
as long as nobody would see and know what everything was good
for.
-
-
Then God’s Spirit acted again saying, “We will make human
beings, who will be like us and resemble us…” (Genesis 1:26).
After His own image, He created mankind. With man another
light appeared, that is the light of knowing and
understanding. It dawned upon people’s mind. It made them
say, “We live for Him, because He is!” However, when man had
disfigured by sin his divine image, he and the whole of
creation were at a loss. Then God, in His immense goodness,
designed a plan of salvation to be carried together with the
Personified Word of God and the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit,
who in the beginning had moved over the water, once again
moved over the womb of the Virgin Mary. She conceived by the
Power of God and gave birth to the Savior of the world: Jesus
Christ, “who for us men and our salvation, came down from
heaven by the Power of the Holy Spirit”.
-
-
When Jesus had ended His fast in the desert, He returned to
Galilee and “the Power of the Spirit was with Him” (Luke
4:14). He entered the synagogue of
Nazareth,
unrolled the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and read aloud: “The
Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has chosen Me to
bring good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). By the end of His
life on earth, Jesus promised that His Spirit would be poured
our over His apostles, the Church and all the people in the
world. We can imagine how excited the apostles were when they
heard what sounded like a strong wind blowing. They felt
themselves changed into new creation. They became fearless
hearing the Lord say, “The Lord is with you; there is nothing
to fear about.”
-
-
The apostles were certainly not used to speaking in public,
but now they experienced for themselves Jesus’ promise, “Do
not worry about how to speak or what to say, what you are to
say will be given to you, when the time comes, because it is
not you who will be speaking; the Spirit of your Father will
be speaking in you” (Matthew 10:19).
-
-
And at another occasion, Jesus told them, “When they bring
you to be tried in the synagogues, before governors or rulers,
do not be worried about how you will defend yourself or what
you will say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time
what you should say” (Luke
12:12).
-
- We
believe in the Holy Spirit. We believe that through His
Power, God’s designs will be accomplished. “The Spirit helps
us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we
ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes with sighs too deep
for words.” (Romans 8:26)
