SURABAYA CORNER

One early morning while attending a Holy Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus here in Surabaya, I could not hear the voice of the priest because of the heavy drops of rain hitting the roof of the Church. I could not help but compare this situation with our daily lives. Be it at home, in the office, in shopping malls, etc.

At home when we are quite busy watching TV or reading newspapers or pocketbooks. Or Mom is quite busy talking with a friend over the phone while her daughter is impatiently    waiting for her to finish because she would like to go on line and chat with her friends. Or Dad is very busy with office work brought home.

In the office, some of us are working very hard, extending work hours just to meet a deadline. Or just busy on the phone chatting with a friend or simply busy playing computer games (after office hours, of course!)  In shopping malls?  Quite busy looking for the latest trend in fashion or in the case of my wife, fully occupied looking for big discounts combing more than 100,000 square  meters of the whole Tunjungan Plaza 1, 2, 3, 4 complex here in Surabaya (a short ad if you do not mind), searching for discounts ranging from 50% to 90%!  And at the end of the day she would happily tell me that she bought a pair of pants, a shirt  or two for so cheap a price. However, this becomes too often that our credit card is complaining! (My wife will forgive me for using her as an example! Actually, she does not spend that much, not that “much” anyway. And by the way, she prays a lot.)

Or even while attending a Mass, sometimes our minds wander. Have you ever experienced this? I confess that I sometimes do, especially if the homily is quite long (forgive me Father), and I mean really long!

There’s nothing wrong  with all of the above activities, provided we do not forget to allot a specific quality time to commune with our Lord Jesus Christ and hear His Words. The problem is, our worldly activities sometimes or to be honest,  oftentimes distract us and we forget all about our Creator and thus fail to “hear His Word,”  e. g., scriptures, Catholic magazines (Kerygma), etc.

However at one time, again while attending another morning Mass with my wife and while in deep prayer, I really sensed the Lord telling me to praise Him! That I do not have to mention my intentions for that day because He already knew what I was about to ask! So what my wife and I did was to take a seat at the rear portion of the Church, where there were no people, and in modulated voice started praising in tongues and thanking the Lord Jesus Christ for all His goodness!

So brothers and sisters, if only we could take a break from our daily worldly activities,  if only we could listen to Him and I mean listen to Him intently, if only we could spend quality time with the Lord, I am sure that He will talk to us.  If you have not done so, try to attend a daily morning Mass before going to office. It is so inspiring to start the day listening to the Word of God. Personally, this is one of the better ways of starting your day right! I pray that you too, dear reader, will hear the voice of God! Happy listening. Amen!
