I saw my Mom walking. Pleasantly surprised I asked: “Mom, can you really walk now?” “Yes, of course” she boastfully replied as she waived her hand for me to join her. Hand in hand we walked joyfully towards the Church. We did not know the schedule of the Mass as it was not the Church that we used to go to. But as we arrived at the main entrance I saw the priest at the altar raising the Sacred Host in consecration. “Thanks God” I uttered “that we were still able to catch up a Mass”. Then we moved forward to the middle pews. As we knelt I happened to glance at the side altar. I noticed another Mass being celebrated. It was again consecration time and I saw the priest raise the Sacred Chalice. Peace, calm and serenity filled the place. My joy of that blissful morning was interrupted when I heard a loud “r-i-i-i-i-i-n-n-n-g”. It was not the Church bell. It was the telephone in the hospital room. I opened my eyes and saw my Mom lying on bed still unable to walk. I realized that I was just dreaming. But I thanked God because my dream was so vivid, so alive that it lingers in my mind not just like a still picture but as a movie camera.

Simultaneously our helper who stayed with me at the hospital also dreamt of Mommy walking.  I thought this was a confirmation of my dream. And that Mommy would truly walk again. But when I told Sis. Beth Roxas about these dreams, she commented that we may look at these from a spiritual angle rather than from a physical plane. Now I realize that she was right. For it was to the HEAVENLY BANQUET that Mommy was called. And of which we are all reminded of especially every Holy Thursday.

That evening during the Last Supper, Jesus knew that His death was near. But instead of being preoccupied with His sufferings and death, His great love for us filled His thoughts on what else He could give us and how He could continue to be with us. In fact, He said, “I will be with you until the end of time.”

And so He instituted the HOLY EUCHARIST, the gift of Himself. He said: “Take this, all of you, and eat it; this is My Body which will be given up for you. Take this, all of you, and drink from it; This is the cup of My Blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all men so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”

As a dying man would give his best inheritance to his favorite child, Jesus gave and continues to give us, His favorites, not just His best but His ALL. He leaves His throne and takes the lowly form of bread and wine just so that He can give Himself to us. Under these species, Jesus is truly present, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Why does God stoop so lowly for us? It’s because a lover, and Jesus is the greatest of all lovers, has but one consuming desire, and that is to be with his beloved. Thus, Jesus stays in the Blessed Sacrament. Each day He waits lovingly, patiently, perseveringly for us to claim His GIFT, the prelude to the HEAVENLY BANQUET to which we are all invited.

Let us not disappoint Him. Let us not be like those in the Gospel (Luke 14:18-20) who were invited to a feast but did not come. They made excuses that enraged the master and forced him to say “None of those invited will get a taste of my food.” (Luke 14:24)
