- Beloved
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
-
- Today
marks the beginning of the Lenten Season, time to prepare ourselves to
welcome the commemoration of the death and resurrection of our Lord
Jesus Christ. This season
of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.
It has been a tradition that we receive ashes on our head or on
our forehead during Ash Wednesday, as a sign that we came from dust
and later on will return to dust.
With this sign we are reminded of our limitation and existence
as a creation. With this
sign we also join ourselves with Christ on His journey to death, so we
can experience resurrection with Him.
-
- The
season of Lent can also be said as a time for inner conversion.
Time to direct our life towards goodness, to deeds full of
goodness. Time to
discipline ourselves towards progress.
Time to reflect on our way of life, until we can direct it to a
better life. Time to have
peace with God and with our own self.
Lenten season is the time to heal our inner wounds including
the bitterness of our life. To
lots of people this season is often also called a time to change
ourselves.
-
- Our
desire to direct ourselves towards goodness is marked by abstinence
and fasting. Fasting and
abstinence serve as a sign that we want to give up desires that are
not in order. Also as a
sign that we can really overcome ourselves and not for our own desires
to guide us. Because of these the readings from the Holy Bible today
invite us to surrender ourselves more to God.
-
- In
the gospel of Matthew, Jesus simply gives advice and motivates us to
be pure with our intentions. He
means that in every good intention we do, our purpose is not to show
off or for display. Fasting,
prayers or almsgiving is done not to be seen or praised by other
people. Like doing it for
the sake of having a good name or for popularity.
It is done not like this, but on the contrary to glorify the
Lord and help others who need our help.
If we do something good, even the smallest good, it should be
motivated to glorify the Lord and to serve others.
That’s the sole purpose.
I do good because I have to do good.
And another thing, all of these should be done willingly,
sincerely and contentedly. It
is not a problem if other people do not notice it.
After all God always sees whatever we do.
-
- Let
us enter this Lenten Season full of direction to God. Let us always support each other and pray that we do better,
even in every smallest thing we do, as long as the name of God is
glorified and other people are served.
