Nuns' unselfish act unlocking Alzheimer's secrets
An ongoing study involving almost 700 School Sisters of Notre Dame is unlocking some of the secrets of Alzheimer's disease and may provide keys to postponing or preventing its devastating dementia symptoms.

Thanks to the unselfish participation of the sisters, researcher David Snowdon said, researchers are finding some answers which reinforce already well-known advice -- eat fruits and vegetables, cut fat intake, exercise, keep mentally active, take vitamins and avoid stroke and head injury.

" While genetics is very important in the disease, "there are other factors too," Snowdon said, citing "lifestyle and environmental factors that we need to focus on."

Snowdon said people often ask what parents can do to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's developing in their children. He and other researchers usually answer, "Read to them." Idea density depends, in large part, on vocabulary and reading comprehension, and the best way to increase both early in life is to "read to your children," he said.

Vatican picks 14 journalists to write pope's Good Friday meditations
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Fourteen journalists from 10 countries have been asked to prepare the meditations and prayers that will be read as Pope John Paul II leads the Way of the Cross at Rome's Colosseum on Good Friday. The journalists, who specialize in covering the Vatican, include four television correspondents, a radio reporter and nine print journalists. On March 18 the Vatican press office released the names of the 14 journalists whose words will guide the March 29 prayer service. Only three of the reporters work for Catholic media: Aura Miguel Vistas of the Portuguese Catholic Radio Renascenca; Sophie de Ravinel of I.Media, a French Catholic news agency; and John Thavis, Rome bureau chief of Catholic News Service.

Pope offers prayers for fathers, asks them to be models of faith
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II offered a special prayer for fathers around the world, asking them to be models of everyday faith for their children. The Pope made the comments two days before the feast of St. Joseph -- March 19 -- which is celebrated as Father's Day in Italy and some other countries. The Pope said St. Joseph accepted his difficult role by listening to God and trying to understand God's will. His attitude of respectful reflection and obedience to God's design earned him the Gospel's definition as a "just man," he said. "The just person, in fact, is the one who prays, who lives the faith, and who tries to do good works in every concrete circumstance of life," the Pope said. He said the greatest treasure left Christians by St. Joseph was his life of prayer.

Florida House passes ban on human cloning
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CNS) -- Florida lawmakers passed a bill March 12 banning so-called "therapeutic" human embryo cloning for research and reproductive cloning. The hard-fought legislation in the Florida House of Representatives was contested by some Florida university researchers and others, but pro-life and other organizations say a message has been sent to U.S. lawmakers to follow suit with a federal ban on cloning. The Florida vote was 70-42. An identical bill in the state Senate faces a potentially tougher fight before the ban would become state law.
