Faith Heals - By Fr. Binzler

Healing of a blind man. His name Bartimaeus. Mark 10: 46-52.

Bartimaeus, a beggar, sitting at the side of the road, heard that Jesus was  passing by. So he shouted:       "Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me." He was scolded by many. They told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted all the louder. “Son of David have pity on me.” Jesus stopped and said, "Call him here." – "What do you want me to do for you?" “Rabbuni, the blind man said to Him, Master, let me see again." Jesus said to him. 'Go, your faith has saved you.' And immediately his sight returned and he followed Him along the road.

It is a wonderful story, that St. Mark tells us. It teaches us something very important about healing. Jesus activates the will and the power to be healed. We have to formulate and phrase what we are asking for.

The story of Bartimaeus is not just happening by chance. It is more. It is giving witness of faith from the disciples of the early Christians. It tells us that Jesus Christ is the life, the real life; and  life in the full. Jesus is the way to this aim. He wishes that we are saved. He wants to be near to us. He touches people physically. Faith in Him bestows salvation. Faith heals.

Bartimaeus has to ask himself, too : does he really believe in Jesus' healing power. He has to word his wish clearly. "Master, let me see again." This is what Jesus calls FAITH. It is almost not a miracle. Because Jesus does not say: "I restore your sight". Instead: ”Go, your faith has saved you.” Jesus wakes up the wish in people to being healed. And their health being restored.

Jesus does not touch Bartimaeus. He tells him that his faithful response to the call, and his understanding of his need, his recognition of who Jesus is, his persistence of calling out for mercy against the wishes of the crowd: all this has cured him

Whenever people trust Him, that He can help, Jesus takes this trust as a sign of faith. And so He grants the healing. Jesus does not just "grant" what we can do with our own endeavor. He trusts in us that we have the power to believe. He wakes up this strength in us, though always respecting our freedom.

After being healed Bartimaeus is able to follow Jesus to Jerusalem, on the way to the Cross. Bartimaeus began to understand the way of Jesus and the way of others in their pains and anxieties and to understand and accept his own sufferings. This is FAITH.
