Carolle BautistaGod's Healing Grace - By Carolle Bautista

Over the past four years I was afflicted with an illness in the stomach and then in the throat, which required me to be under medication for a long time...not just months, but years.   Both illnesses, I realized later on, was brought about by too much stress in work and in my everyday life.  Not that people around me made my life stressful, but it was until much later that I realized that was more of how I perceived and led my life to be.

The funny thing about it, was that being sick had become too stressful for me that even just taking the medicines was something I really dreaded.  I changed doctors alright, hoping that the last one would make me feel better than the previous one.

Then one day, I met this doctor who after several visits told me:   "You know, no matter what medicine I give you, you will not get well unless you eliminate the stress from your life and change your perceptions to a more positive one".  Then she pointed to the picture of Mother Theresa hung on  her wall, and she told me how selflessly she happily lived her life serving other people.
Healing Mass celebrated by Fr. Vic Robles on April 2001
Over time, my illness in my stomach got better, but I started to develop an illness in the throat. Then one day, Fr. Vic Robles, a Filipino priest from the Divine Mercy Shrine, came to Indonesia and officiated a Healing Mass which I attended.  Since then, I never had any serious attack on my throat.  To this day, I am amazed at how our Lord Jesus had healed me through the doctor, and then through the priest.  We just have to believe that we would get healed...... in His time and according to His plan!

Because indeed, even long before, Jesus is our true healer.  In Matthew 4:23 it says, “Jesus went around all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, and curing all kinds of sickness and disease among the people.”

Looking back at all those years, I have prayed to the Lord for physical healing, I have asked the Community to pray for me, but only then did I realize that on top of the physical healing, I also needed spiritual healing.  It is the kind of healing received when one's anxieties and fears are dispelled by our acceptance of the situation and smoothening of our relationships with our family, peers, community and neighbors.

But in our everyday battles in this world, we don't realize that unknowingly, we forget to take care of our physical body and spirit by keeping them healthy.  In 1 Corinthians 3:16, it clearly establishes this:  “Do you not know that you are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit abides within you?  If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him.  God’s temple is holy, and you are this temple.”

But how could we nurture the Spirit within us if we fall into sin, and how can we receive physical and spiritual healing if we don't receive the fruit of the Spirit?  In Galatians 5:22, “But the fruit of the Spirit is charity, joy and peace, patience, understanding of others, kindness and fidelity, gentleness and self-control.”  When we do not have this in our hearts, how could we receive God's healing grace?

Yes, the Lord Jesus is our Healer, and everything turns out well when we put our life in good order by following His commandments. Learning to take a little time each day to care of ourselves and our neighbors (just like Mother Theresa) is the key to getting through our difficult times.
