- Catholics
have many devotions to saints. We all have our favorite saints to
whom we call upon for help whenever we have some special needs.
-
- But
I think among all the saints in Heaven, the one who is closest to
our hearts and to whom we are most devoted to is our Blessed Mother
Mary. I am sure that at one time or another we have called on her
for help, either thru the recitation of the Holy Rosary or by
directly praying to her.

- We
ask for her help by the names we know her -- as Our Lady of Fatima,
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Our Lady of the
Miraculous Medal, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our
Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Good Counsel or simply as the
Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ.

- In
my own life I have had three major encounters with Mother Mary who
has been there all along praying for me. First, she was there for me
as Our Lady of Good Voyage. I was still working at a bank in the
Middle East then. And I remember that each time before I went back
to the country where I worked, I would go and visit her shrine at
the Antipolo Church (east of Manila) and pray for a safe trip. And I
know that through her powerful intercession I never encountered any
difficulty or problem during those five years of working and traveling
abroad.

- Next,
she was the Mother of Perpetual Help who was responsible for my
spiritual conversion. It was 5 years after I had gone back to Manila
from my job in Saudi Arabia then. Suddenly there was this urge and
desire in me to work abroad again. So I began attending the Mass and
Novena to our Mother of Perpetual Help every Wednesday evening in
our Church. I remember that every time the host was elevated, I
would pray and ask her to help me find employment abroad again. And
after completing even only 7 Wednesdays of the Novena, I got a call
from someone that I was being hired by a company in Indonesia.
Personally my plan then was to stay in Indonesia for two years only
and to save enough money to buy a new car to replace my old car. But
the Lord had another plan - a better plan. It was here, in a Muslim
country at that, where I had my conversion experience.

- It
was again after another 5 years when I had my third encounter with
the Blessed Mother. This time it was in Australia where I had a
temporary work assignment. And it was in a Marian Convention in
Melbourne where I met her - the traveling image of Our Lady of
Fatima. It was only after this encounter when my devotion and love
for her really deepened. I also realized that she had been leading
me all along to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. And it was also
after this experience when my love for the Lord grew more and more.

- It
had been 5 years since my last big encounter with our Blessed
Mother. I hope that I will meet her again soon…..perhaps as Our
Lady of Medjugorje or Lourdes.

- Our
Blessed Mother always leads us to her Son. I pray that you too
Brothers & Sisters, will have your own encounters with her and
be led “to Jesus through Mary”.
