- I was just thinking to myself,
feeling so proud from within. Proud because I felt so lucky… we
had just bought home a computer… the other day we had bought a VCD.
I felt so great because, now we could afford to buy these things all
by ourselves. My husband and I have come up the hard way. Things
that were luxurious dreams for us then, were right here in front of
us now and we could afford them all! There were so many other times,
as well, when I felt lucky.. for example, I got a job so fast,
without even really trying hard for it… which normally so many
others do. And there are just too many things to list down…. As I
sat and recollected all these things, I was suddenly enlightened. I
remembered a story told to me by my beloved granny when I was still
a child… it goes like this….
-
- The
master once called his three servants and said to them, " My
dear and faithful ones, I am going out of town for a couple of
years. I want to give each of you some gold coins and a few things
to take care of. On my return, I want an account." He calls the
first one and to him he gives 10 gold coins and some sheep. He feels
happy and goes off. To the second one he gives 10 gold coins, sheep
and a garden of vegetables. He feels very lucky and goes off. He
calls the third one and gives him 20 gold coins, sheep, horses,
vegetable garden and his (master’s) own house. This fellow feels
on the top of the world. He thanks his master a number of times and
goes away.
-
- His
master leaves for the town. Each of the servants go on their own way
to do the jobs assigned. The first one takes his sheep to graze,
buys some food for them and keeps an account. The second fellow does
his part of the work. The third fellow who had the most of the
things takes everything for granted. With the 20 gold coins he
appoints servants to take care of the sheep, the horses and the
garden. He relaxes and enjoys life in his master’s house as though
it was his own.
- Years
pass by and the master returns. He calls the three of them. The
first one goes and gives his accounts. He shows him the expenses and
the income, which he got by selling wool from the sheep. The master
feels happy and gives him a rise and puts him in charge of several
things. The second one too gives him an account of the expenses
incurred and the income he gained by selling off wool and
vegetables. The master feels proud of this one as well, and gives
him a rise and puts him in charge of so many other things. The third
one goes in … he has nothing to show but expenses. He had wasted
his days and neglected so many things. The master gets furious and
screams, " You good-for-nothing. I had given you double the
things I gave these people because, God had blessed you with so many
talents that these others do not have… and how you have wasted all
these. I gave you more and therefore I expected more in return. In
fact you have wasted all that I gave you. I do not want to see you
again." And he was banished from his master’s kingdom.
-
- My
granny told me – if you are given more, it means you are liable to
give more account as well. Feeling lucky and thanking God when he
gives us these things is not enough. God gives us talents because he
wants us to use them selflessly for the benefit of his other
creation to whom he has not given a talent like yours. He made some
of us doctors, so that lives could be saved. He made some teachers,
so that we could learn. He made some preachers, some writers, so
that they could show others the true light that leads us to
selflessness, humility and charity. He made some of us leaders so
that others could be lead on the right path - a path that leads to
the kingdom of heaven.
-
- As
I thank God, at this moment, for all the unlimited things and
talents given to me by Him, I must remember that I have to account
for all these. The more I have the more will be the accounting. I do
not wish to be banned by my master, so while still I have the
time… today… let me make a strong effort to do something good to
my fellow men in need. Let me not ignore any chance of doing good. I
have to give an account of the time spent as well.
-
- So
while still in my reverie of feeling lucky for the numerous talents,
I keep wondering how to use them selflessly……… and I just
realize that I have already used one, right here, right now and I
hope to enlighten at least some of you who read this. I thank and
praise God that I am able to write.
