SURABAYA CORNER

A few weeks ago, I watched  a Filipino movie about a widow who left her three children to work as a domestic helper (DH) in Hongkong.  I got carried away with the scene towards the end of the movie when the mother tried to explain to her children why she had to sacrifice,  leave them and work miles away from home and serve other people instead of her own children.

The above scene is typical of many Filipino mothers who leave their husbands and children for greener pasture by working as DHs not only in Hongkong but in other parts of the world as well. Indeed, this is truly a heroic act by these loving mothers who want only the best for their children.

Our heavenly Mother, Mama Mary, is not to be outdone! She intercedes and  prays a lot for us, her children, so that her son Jesus Christ will grant our prayers. She is the greatest intercessor there is. With so many people requesting for her intercession, I believe that she no longer “sleeps!” And she loves us so much that she also encourages us to pray the Rosary regularly.

In his article “The Everywhere Prayer” (New Covenant Magazine), the late Fr. Dale Francis said, “I pray the Rosary wherever and whenever it seems like a good idea to me.” Furthermore, he said that he prays the Rosary sometimes while walking, queuing, while waiting for a ride or while riding on trains. Also during baseball and football games. He was quick to add though that the best place  to pray the Rosary is in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

When I was still in college, our aunt would  call us every evening to pray the Rosary. I slept almost all of the time when we prayed the Rosary then. I couldn’t last long because it seemed like “eternity” to me and I was too lazy. Then I would finally wake up when I could   “sense” that they were almost through  when the “Hail Holy Queen” is recited.

However, the above article inspired me a lot that I now pray the Rosary at least three times a day, i.e., all the three mysteries, Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. Praise the Lord! Upon waking up early in the morning, I finish praying one mystery. After hearing the daily 5:30 AM Bahasa Indonesia Mass, I say the Rosary with my wife. On my way to the office (walking distance), while inside the elevator, I start  saying the Rosary and would normally finish  three decades before reaching my office.  After having lunch, I would continue saying the last two decades. In the evening, on my way  home,  again I  would pray a decade or two. (I think I am getting addicted to praying the  Rosary.) Now you may say, it is not the “quantity but the quality.” I agree. But I would rather have both of them.  However, in all of those Rosaries I prayed even those in church, I never have prayed a perfect one, wherein my mind never wandered.

In the same article, Fr. Francis related a story. A worker in a field saw a  monk on a horse, praying the Rosary and he said, “I wish I had it that easy. Just riding on a horse and praying. “ The monk smiled   at him and said, “You think it is easy?” I’ll tell you something, my friend, if you’ll just say one Our Father with perfect attention, I’ll give you this horse.” The man said, “Oh, boy I’ll take you on that and said, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed……. do I get the saddle too?”

As Fr. Francis emphasized, chances are, we’re not going  to pray with perfection, but the important thing to do is to pray. I remember what Bro. Bo once said, “Just keep on praying even if you do not feel like praying.”  In closing, Fr. Francis said, “Pray the Rosary and Our Lady won’t mind, I’m sure, where you pray it or where you are when  you say it or even if your mind wanders -  because your love is there even if your mind wanders.”
Brothers and sisters, I pray that you too will be inspired to pray the Rosary regularly, “whenever and wherever” you have the opportunity. If our mother here on earth could work so hard for our cause, how much more with our mother in heaven, Mama Mary. Amen!
