Feastday reminds us of the footprints of Jesus Christ in our hearts,
as St. Peter wrote in his first letter:
“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered
for you, leaving you an example so that you should follow in His
steps.” (1 Peter 2:21)
-
- We
are called to be the visible track of the footprints of Jesus in the
world. Through our example the world may see what Jesus had told us.
He tells us: “You will
receive and be strengthened by the Holy Spirit who will come to you
and you will become My witnesses to the ends of the world.’ So
through us the world may see what Jesus wished to give to the world.
We, Christians, are the only footprints and token that Jesus had
left. The seal of baptism is not to be meant only for our own
salvation. We would be guilty over the dreadful situation around us
if we just closed our eyes. We often only keep waiting and looking
up to heaven, just as the disciples had done after Jesus had been
lifted up to heaven.
-
- “You
shall become My witnesses to the ends of the world.” The
disciples of Jesus are not to leave the world to the powers of evil.
They have to continue the work of salvation. We have received a
great message with a promise for the world. Often we think that God
will finally save the world. But this attitude does not change
anything in the world. We forget that Jesus sends us in His Name.
-
- St.
Luke promised that Christ will come again. As for not being seen
anymore does not mean that He is no longer among us. “I
am with you to the ends of the world.” What can we do? How can
our mission be visible? How can I become a witness of Christ to my
ordinary humdrum of life? A witness to my neighbors? To give witness
has many ways of expression. Every one of us has his talents – his
own specific gifts. Let us become aware of the gifts of the Holy
Spirit bestowed on us.
-
- There
was a priest in Lebanon who was unable to preach God’s word to the
people. They were so divided among themselves. It was humanly
speaking impossible to bring them together. So he just used to walk
in the streets of Beirut and greeted kindly and always happily the
people who were sitting in front of their homes. When he died, there
was a countless crowd of mourners at his funeral. His mission was
very simple. But people were so touched by his way of greeting them.
-
- May
the Holy Spirit show us what we can do. And may He give us the
consciousness of His gifts to become witnesses of Christ.
