Leslie FreiresDEATH ~ OUR GOING HOME
By Leslie Freires

There is something in death that makes people sad, cry or grieve. Understandably, the mere thought of it even makes one shudder or makes one fearful of its eventuality. Leaving a loved one or saying goodbye is always a sad reality, which many of us dislike.  I, for one, experienced a sad moment when my dog died when I was small, leaving a big hole in my heart for sometime, or when I said goodbye to my closest friend who entered the convent.  Almost always, death leaves us a certain pain that may only be healed through time by the grace of God.

But is death really something to be scared of?  Many would relate about near-death experiences.  And despite the “heavenly” and “ecstatic” moment, many are still left wondering what is there at the end of the tunnel where a great light envelopes one at that precise moment when one is about to be welcomed at another world.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13; 17-18, it says, “Our brothers, we want you to know the truth about those who have died, so that you will not be sad, as are those who have no hope. Then we who are living at that time will be gathered up along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so, we will always be with the Lord.  So then, encourage one another with these words.”   Yes, death is a “leaving behind” of our worldly life to start a new one with no other than our Mighty Creator, the Source of all life.  It is a life of bliss where one can no longer feel pain and hunger; only happiness and joy with Jesus, and with God, our Father, in Heaven.

Because of this, we, as Christians, should be reminded that death is a reunion with our Father, who is waiting for us to be with Him in eternal glory – in Heaven, the place He has set for us, where we rightly belong. God, in His goodness, wants us to be with Him in that beautiful place. He has for all times called and sought us till we return to Him.

I am reminded of the movie, “Finding Nemo.”  I was especially struck at how the father fish did everything in finding his son, Nemo.  He swam the farthest seas and sought his son like no other. He was so focused on this one great task he decided to do.  With great passion, he went to find his one and only son.  God is pretty much more like that! With great passion, He looks for us even if we climb the highest mountain or swim the deepest sea.  He would do everything in forgiving us, providing for us, loving us… until we become united with Him when death has no more control over us as we reach our final destination.

Death is no more than a transition period where we will be transformed into the very essence of our immortality. We say goodbye to our mortal lives and plunge into life that is eternal.  Yes, it is a time to say goodbye.  The time to go home to where we truly belong.  In Heaven.
