Ramon MartillanoDO YOU HAVE Class?
By Ramon Martillano

Before you answer the above question, please read on.

Last March 10, 2003, we were invited by the Surabaya International School to witness the induction of our daughter Kristine Joy (Princess) and some of her schoolmates as new members of the National Honors Society (NHS), a prestigious, internationally recognized organization based in the USA.

In his inspirational talk, the school’s headmaster focused on the following four qualifications required to be eligible as member of the NHS:

1. Character – defined as “what you do when no one is looking.”
2. Leadership – putting yourself on the line, saying, “OK let’s do it and I will take responsibility.”
3. Scholarship – doing more than expected. Wanting to do well, and making it happen by hard work and sacrifice.
4. Service – doing what is necessary for others.

He inserted the letter “A” in the middle to complete the word CLASS.  He used the word “Amplify” - defined as “to make it larger or more powerful; to add to.”

After listening to his talk, I thought that all of the above qualifications also apply to our Catholic faith.

We have to have good character.  Our words, actions and thoughts should be always pleasing to God even when no human is looking because actually, God is always watching us, 24 hours a day.  We need to be good leaders not only in our Community but also in the office and at home.  Making unpopular but right decisions is a quality of a good leader.  Scholarship applied to our Catholic faith means striving to know more about God (such as regularly reading Scriptures and other Catholic books and magazines), so that this knowledge could be shared with others.  Service – going the extra mile to help others.  The aforementioned headmaster emphasized, “It is putting others before yourself.”  This is also quite true in our Catholic faith.  However, let us not do good and serve others but at the same time commit sins believing that our sins will be offset by our good deeds. Amplify – Armed with all these four qualifications, let us “go throughout the whole world and preach (amplify) the Gospel to all mankind.” (Mark 16:15)

Rephrasing the title question, we ask ourselves -- What have we done to “add to” our Catholic faith?  What have we done to make our faith bigger and more powerful, in terms of service to others, and exerting more positive leadership such as helping our Community move ahead even when it requires us to give up something we wanted to do?  Now let me ask you, do you have CLASS?

A few weeks ago, some members of the Genesis Surabaya took a 2-hour trip to Tumpang to visit the Mt. Carmel Monastery.  It was a very touching experience as we enjoyed the tranquility of the place atop several beautiful, green mountains.
We  also prayed the Rosary before the statue of Mama Mary located at the slope of one of the mountains.  After that, the group proceeded to the house of Jun Erguiza -a Filipino living in Malang -  for our lunch. (Thanks Mang Jun!)
The last stop was a visit to the Bakti Luhur Orphanage as we shared a few precious moments with our less fortunate brothers and sisters.  The whole day trip was tiring but definitely spiritually gratifying.  Praise God
