Straight from the Heart

Carolle BautistaIF WE COULD BE LIKE MARY
By Carolle Bautista

As a little child, I remembered how we would celebrate the devotion to Mother Mary during the month of May in our small barrio.  We had a makeshift altar where anyone in the barrio could offer flowers to Mother Mary every night.  I specially liked weekends when I am allowed to do the flower offerings to our Mother Mary.

When I learned how to say my prayers, I was eventually able to pray the Rosary, which I realized much later was taught to us by Mother Mary herself.  But because of my young age, I did not yet understand why the prayer took so long to recite and often found it difficult to finish the prayer.

As I look back over the years, I realized how I have grown with Mother Mary in my midst, always calling on her to intercede on my behalf, yet barely knowing her at all.  She had been my intercessor when my husband was in the hospital bed fighting for his life (that was the first time in my life I repeatedly recited the mysteries of the Rosary, five times in a row), when my children are sick and need healing, or when I am fervently praying for my personal intentions.

Maybe, it took too long for me to realize who Mother Mary really is.  I felt I just recognized her when I started to have the longing to pray the Rosary, to be involved in devotions to her, and to learn to pray in meditation, not repetition.  I always remind myself of her simple ways, her purity of heart and most of all, her humility and good example of obedience to the will of God and her motherhood.

In Luke 1:38, it shows how willing Mary was to obey what is God’s will for her, that is, to be the mother of Jesus, our Savior, “I am the handmaid of the Lord; let what you have said be done to me.”

If we could be like Mary, wouldn’t our lives be totally different? Why not?  Her life was lived for the Lord, and not for herself.  She was always a good child to her parents, then a good mother to Jesus, and a good wife to St. Joseph. How she loved and served the Lord was beyond measure.  She lived by faith in the Lord and her trust in Him never wavered.  Once she discerned the will of God, she followed and accepted it wholeheartedly.

We could only strive to become like our model, Mother Mary, if we ask for her intercession to help us.  Finally, let us ask ourselves how God is calling us right now. We should not resist God’s will just like Mary.  We would realize later on that from simple beginnings, our lives could have new beginnings, and we truly begin to live.
