HERE'S
THE LATEST
- By Armand Sol
Dominating our newspaper headlines almost everyday
is the SARS scare - sickness here, passing away there; not to
mention the terrorist threats that still lurk in every nation.
We live in an imperfect world. In these trying times, we cannot help
but wonder if God is listening to our prayers. Or are we praying
enough? Our Community has its own battles. We just learned a few
weeks ago that Sis. Liza Caleda is suffering from breast cancer and
more prayers are needed. Bro. Martin’s mother, Theresia Lie has
gone back to her Creator on April 27. To Bro. Martin and his family,
our heartfelt condolences and prayers.
But there is a time for everything, and a season for every
activity under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) With sadness comes
rejoicing. And there are a lot of reasons to be joyful. It’s
another boy for Bro. Bong and Sis. Richel Calio. Ethan Ray, their
third child, was born on May 1, the same birth date as Bro. Benny
Caleda. To the Calio couple, congratulations, and a very happy
birthday to Bro. Benny.

Bro. Pete led the Way of the Cross to prepare the Community
for the coming Holy Week. Presented in a different approach, we were
taken back in time as selected brothers and sisters read the
Scripture passages of the passion and death of Christ, and then
followed by individual meditations.

Hallelujah! Jesus is alive! The Community had its annual
Easter Family Day celebration held at the Simprug Terrace Apartment
(coinciding with Bro. Martin’s birthday). The care group of Bro.
Benny and Sis. Liza did a great job in organizing the special event.
Sis. Tintin choreographed the delightful Children’s Ministry
presentation – singing and dancing to the music of Don Moen’s “God
is Good All the Time” complete with an all-white get-up. New games
were played with so much fun – children presented their creative and
colorful Easter eggs; the egg-catching game participated by the
husbands and wives (won by Bro. Alan and Sis. Malu Villareal); and
the most enjoyed game: the costume-designing contest using
newspapers, scotch tapes and a lot of creativity. Participants of
the said game were Bro. Eric, as the Roman soldier; Sis. Indri, as
the Risen Lord; Nisha, Bro. Desmond and Sis. Mildred’s daughter as
an Egyptian princess; Sis. Tintin, as the Easter bunny; and, Bro.
Bong, as the Easter bride, who actually won the top prize with Nisha
bagging the second prize. More photos can be seen at the bottom of
this page.

The sharing night had some important revelations and
blessings. First, Sis. Liza shared her battle with breast cancer and
how she is blessed by it. Then, Sis. Christine opened her heart
regarding the death of her husband, Bro. Sugiono. Sis. Mariza
thanked God and the Community for the safe heart operation of her
mother. And lastly, Sis. Pinky Brosas, who now lives in
Australia with
her family, witnessed how God has been blessing them in their new
environment.

As accommodating as always, Fr. Veeger officiated the First
Friday Mass at the Gereja Santa Maria. Assisting Fr. Veeger in the
Mass were the altar boys consisting of Gabriel, CJ, Jack and
Christian. Afterwards, CJ and MJ treated the members present that
night to a sumptuous dinner. It was a belated celebration of the
brothers’ birthday on April 30.
The month of May signals something wonderful to happen to
the Community as Bro. Ken Noecker and his team are scheduled to
visit the Community and conduct the “Call and Mission Conference.”
Details of this conference will be published on our next issue.
