Ana Lee MasiasTHERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
By Ana Lee Masias

It’s been said many times that if one wants to keep a conversation neutral and free of arguments, then politics and religion are topics to stay clear from.  For the most part, I do stick by this rule.  But I remember very clearly one particular time when I didn’t comply.

While waiting for the family dinner to be served in the resort-like, laid-back ambiance of our hometown in the Philippines, someone steered the conversation to his recent conversion from Catholic to Born Again Christian. All was fine up until he started ‘preaching’ about how wrong we Catholics are in our belief and practices that put (Mother) Mary up on a pedestal. But isn’t that where she should be?

Wow!  My mood suddenly switched from relaxed to fired-up mode. Mary was the person specially chosen by God to mother Jesus.  This was the humble servant who said “Be it done to me according to your will (Luke
1:38) ” even if it meant shame and dishonor to her reputation. This was the gentle voice that whispered into Jesus’ ear in the Wedding at Cana and whose request was granted (a biblical backing in support of Mary, our great intercessor, was important to get my point accepted here).  This was the mother who suffered through an innocent Son’s trial and ultimately, His murder.

I ignored the warning in my husband’s eyes that flashed a ‘let it go now’ light.  I just couldn’t stop now. In defense of Mother Mary, I went on rattling why we keep her on a pedestal.  Mother Mary never wanted to take center stage.  In all humility, she was always behind Jesus – caring, supporting and loving.

Isn’t our Blessed Mother the role model of our mothers today?  The gentle and persuasive go-between children and fathers.  The peacemaker when siblings are fighting. The ‘mom’ uttered by a hurt child.  The person who sits and prays untiringly throughout the night by her sick child’s bed.  Don’t we honor our very own mothers who have done and who continue to do so much for us? Then why can’t we do the same for our Blessed Mother? The mother whom Jesus Himself respected and honored. Jesus, from the Cross, “…said to the disciple ‘There is your mother… (John 19:27).”  In the same manner, He gave us His mother and gave her a role in the salvation of all mankind by making us all her children.

The battle of words regarding our dear Mother Mary ended in a ceasefire when the soup was finally served.  But if I had to, I would not hesitate to stand in Mother Mary’s defense all over again.  Even if it means getting people around me uncomfortable.  As Bill O’Reilly (Fox News’ controversial host) said, ‘you just don’t give up your beliefs because of the reaction of men’.

Let me ask you, dear Brothers and Sisters, what would have you done under the same circumstance?
