Ramon MartillanoEVANGELIZATION BY
CROSS-POLLINATION
By Ramon Martillano

Some of us have seen the mega-hit Mel  Gibson-directed movie, “The Passion of the Christ.” It is a very powerful way of evangelizing people. I’ve read somewhere that Mel Gibson has openly said that if the film succeeds in having the power to evangelize those who have seen it, then he shall consider the film to have fulfilled its mission, His mission ultimately. Mel Gibson was just His instrument. And I truly believe that the film has achieved its goal of evangelizing people from all walks of life, in almost all corners of the world.  By the time this article hits the printing press, the movie would have earned several hundred million dollars in gross revenues.  Let us hope and pray that the profit from this movie will be used to produce other movies of the same quality and mission.

But we do not have the means to duplicate Mel Gibson’s success. That’s fine. In our own small way, we can do our own evangelization. In our office for example, my boss asked me to start a prayer meeting.  Every month, we invite a speaker and Catholic and Protestant employees alike are encouraged to attend. My boss may not be aware of it but   he  is   doing  an  “indirect”  act of evangelization. After our first prayer meeting, we resolved to pray together every morning before we start our work. We assign a prayer leader for each week. One day, I lost my temper and was quite mad that I have to scold some of my staff.  The following day, the prayer leader prayed something like, “Lord, please grant patience to our superiors when we commit mistakes in our work and also grant us the knowledge to be able to do our tasks correctly.”  Well, that is God’s way of speaking to you and me.

I got this e-mail from a friend, which I would like to share with you. In his book “How to Talk Well,” James Bender relates a story about a farmer who grew award–winning corn. Each year, he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One time a newspaper reporter interviewed him and discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked. "Why Sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."

The farmer is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor's corn also improves. So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace in the love of Christ must help their neighbors to live in peace.  We must share the Word, our spiritual blessings with our neighbors. Let the seed in our hearts, the Word of God, swirl from one neighbor to another. Let that “cross-pollination” work in our lives as well. We must be good examples for other people to follow. And if this “cross-pollination,” ripple effect of evangelization succeeds from one neighborhood to another, then and only then can we say that we have accomplished our mission to spread the Good News of our salvation. Amen.
