Whether evil spirits in the “common” sense or Evil Spirit (i.e., Satan) in the “proper” sense, just these mere words already elicit morbid thoughts and awful feelings. How much more if we actually hear, feel or see evil spirits! I bet the least of the effects will be our hairs standing on end.  Spirits as they are, they actually have no physical manifestation except in the havoc they cause in the natural order of things.

We find in the Bible several passages referring to evil spirits - enough for us to realize the fact that evil exists and abounds in this world, orchestrated by none other than Satan himself. Theology would probably have a more exhaustive explanation on this matter. Because of the uneasiness the subject evokes, in lieu of delving into evil spirits itself, we could perhaps focus our efforts on knowing more about the Holy One.  For the truths we learn about God do not only teach us about His nature but in a way also show us who Satan is.  Our God is almighty, eternal, holy, infinite, loving, perfect, pure…  Everything our God is, the Evil Spirit is absolutely not!

What I am sharing is nothing new to you.  But as one sister said, there’s nothing the Evil Spirit dislikes more than having his ways exposed.  So please allow me…

The power of the Evil Spirit is limited but he is cunning at deceiving us of his might.  He  is   after  all   the   king   of   deception.

And if we are not careful, we may succumb to his devious ways in his various forms and guises. Satan capitalizes on our constant struggle to lead good, holy lives in this world where, alongside goodness, evil also permeates all threads of our lives. To the less discerning, the Evil Spirit commonly promotes that good things can also result from doing wrong.

In our daily lives, how many times have we used the excuse that the end justifies the means, for our sinful actions?  Or accept the so-called necessary evil? It’s scary to realize how our lives have become so compromised!  Beware! For the Evil Spirit is relentless in his efforts to alienate us from our loving God.  It is his malicious intent to make us share in his wretched condition.  Brothers and sisters, will we allow, or rather, are we letting ourselves become prey of the evil one?

The true nature of the Evil Spirit cannot be concealed even in the most attractive or most innocuous form it takes.  Or despite the nicest of all wrappings! Our eyes of faith will reveal this to us.  As all lies and deceptions are distortions of the truth, knowing the Truth, being with the Truth is all the power we need to fend off evil.  In John 8:32, Jesus said, “The Truth will set you free.”   He says further, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”  (John 14:6).

In the contest of good and evil, we all have the makings of victors. Note how most contest judges decide on who wins by the x-factor that the eventual winner possesses.  Well, we have more than the x-factor.  We have the Christ-factor in us! By Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection, He freed us from the evil bondage of sin and death, and conquered once and for all the power of Satan (Hebrew 2:14-15). The outcome of the contest is already certain.  It is just a matter of time.  But lest we become complacent, as Satan would like it, now is actually the time that we should be most vigilant, be most steadfast in our faith and be fully dependent on no one but God.

 All Glory to God!
