Ramon MartillanoHOW TO DEAL WITH ANGER
By Ramon Martillano

anger n. violent vindictive passion; sudden and strong displeasure as a result of injury, opposition or mistreatment.

In one of our prayer meetings, several   brothers were playing a poker game together. At the same time, they were all drinking liquor. As the game progressed, a brother noted that he was already losing about 25 million Rupiah. Then, he noticed that one of the brothers was actually cheating. Under the influence of liquor, he got very angry and in his rage, he pulled out his gun and…

Of course we do not play poker in our prayer meetings nor do we bring guns.  This was just a short skit - an extreme case to dramatize how anger could lead us to sin.

While writing this article, I was very angry with our driver who went on leave for two days without making sure he had somebody to replace him. Well, most if not all of us get angry almost everyday, in varying degrees. Getting angry though is not a sin. Jesus himself experienced anger and yet did not yield to sin. However, we have to be reminded as it is written in Ephesians 4:26, If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you to sin, and do not stay angry all day. (Underscore supplied). The message in this passage is quite clear: (1) it is alright to get angry (i.e., for the right reasons) as long as you do not allow your anger to lead you to sin; and, (2) do not stay angry all day, reconcile before the sun goes down. Easier said than done? Brothers and sisters, do not underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit!

When we get angry and allow our emotions to boil high and get out of hand, we are actually inviting the devil to control us. And when the devil is in control over us, it is almost certain that we will commit a sin.  Please bear in mind that among all our emotions, anger is perhaps the rawest, strongest, and potentially the most destructive.  Moreover, it has been proven that anger can also produce a host of physical problems ranging from ulcers to hypertension. And probably the most common companion of anger is depression. So watch out brothers and sisters!

According to an article I read, there are several types of anger, namely, rage, resentment and righteous indignation. The last type is the kind of anger we feel when we witness certain forms of injustice and wicked acts.  So HOW then should we deal with anger? The article gives four steps. (1) You have to acknowledge your anger to yourself and to God. (2) Tell God that you are angry at whom/what, i.e., identify the source. (3) Having pinpointed the source of your anger, choose to respond to it through the power of the Holy Spirit.  (4) Lastly, deal with your anger quickly through the power of the Holy Spirit

Finishing this article reminded me how to handle my own anger towards our driver. I feel better now. (I later talked to our driver and gently reprimanded him.) I pray that dealing with anger in this four-step way becomes a habit not only for me but for you as well.  Amen.
