Joy EnerioDISCIPLESHIP IS FOR ALL
By Joy Enerio

Whoever wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day and follow in My steps.” (Luke 9:23)  This verse spells out what we are to be if we are to become followers of Christ.

Our relationship with God may be described thru the letters SSS.  Each of us is to be a SERVANT, SOLDIER, and SON (or daughter).

To deny our very self is to be a SERVANT.  We are servants of the Lord and co-workers in the vineyard. We are to obey His commands.  God calls us to live lives of holiness.  He calls us all to serve Him and work for the very salvation of men.  When I came to Surabaya, I volunteered to be a reader in Church during Mass, a proclaimer of God’s Word.  Days before my assignment, I would practice reading to be able to proclaim God’s Word very well.  Reading the whole chapter of the Scripture reading gives me a deeper understanding of its true message.  It is a privilege to do this for the Lord!  My husband and I are also happy and grateful to be members of the Genesis Catholic Community - Surabaya.  The Community has become a venue for spiritual growth and maturity that the Lord provides us.

To take up our cross each day is to be a SOLDIER.  The cross is our weapon, by which we are able to defeat the forces of darkness and evil.  To be a soldier is to evangelize and to take territory from Satan.  In any conversation I have with others, it has been spontaneous for me to cite some incidents or messages from the Bible to drive a point.  I try to be a soldier- able to speak about my Creator, my Captain, my Great Commander, and able to defend my faith.

To follow in Jesus’ steps is to be a SON.  It is like Jesus in His relationship with God the Father.  Jesus is the perfect Son, in whom the Father is well pleased.  If we want to please God, then we follow Jesus.  The more I read and study the Word of God, the more I learn about Jesus, His ways and His manner of dealing with others.

In relation to SSS, our relationship with each other may also be described in three aspects:

We are CO-WORKERS in the task of evangelization.  We are co-workers responding to the call for more workers in the harvest for the Kingdom of God.  As a mother and a wife, my foremost duty is to evangelize and to set a good example to my family in words and actions.  By being such, I bring my loved ones closer to God.  Aside from my family, I try to do my share in the task of evangelization in my parish/community in whatever way I can like sharing in a meeting, singing in the choir, or even writing this article.

We are COMRADES-IN-ARMS, fellow soldiers who are engaged in spiritual warfare.  We follow our King, the Lord Jesus Christ and denounce Satan.

We are BROTHERS and SISTERS because we are part of one big family of God.  To be a part of a family or community is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Now, how do we sum up being a servant, a soldier, and a son?  DISCIPLESHIP.  God calls us to be His disciples.  This call is given to all without exception.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for calling me, by name
For calling me to be Your servant, soldier, and son.
Forgive me when I don’t respond fully well
to Your call for discipleship.
Thank You for Your immeasurable love.
I love You, Lord. Amen.
