Straight from the Heart
Carolle BautistaAM I HIS DISCIPLE?
By Carolle Bautista

When we ask ourselves the question “Am I His Disciple?,” we must have reflected our uncertainty on the courses of actions we take trying to become a good and effective disciple of Christ.

During the times of the  twelve apostles, who were the first disciples of Christ, we have seen how they have been guided by Jesus Christ and were asked to make disciples of all nations.  Some gave up their lives and died as martyrs leading their lives the way a true disciple of Christ should live.

In the present times, we could truly become the disciples of Jesus Christ by the manner by which we live our lives.  We could be a father, a mother, a daughter or a son, a grandmother or a grandfather.  Whatever vocation we are in does not really matter, as long as we follow in the footsteps of Christ, our Lord.

We take the example of a typical family, where the father works the whole day (and for some, many hours of the night) in the office: How can he become a disciple of Christ in his office, among the people who might have admired and respected him, among the people who might have hated and opposed him?  And when he comes home to his wife and children, how does he show that he is a real disciple of Christ?  Does he spend time with his family reading the Bible or praying, no matter how briefly each day, or is he burned out and tired upon coming home that all he could do is sleep, or for some, watch television?

For a mother who stays the whole day with the children, how can she set herself as an example of a disciple of Christ to her children?  Is she able to encourage her children to have Christ-like values, where God is the center of life, not the TV, the toys, or the so many diversions of today in the malls?  Are her prayers transformed into action, where the children see in her a mirror where they would rather pray with her than play?  In the mother’s activities with other fellow mothers, where they try to reach out to the less fortunate, is she able to see also and prioritize the  concerns of her household staff, who might be in need as well?

For the daughters and the sons who go to school, do they know the meaning of what it is to be a disciple of Christ?  Are they ashamed to stand up for what is right in the eyes of God, because it is not “cool” in the eyes of their fellow students?  How many of them would rather be hanging out with their friends than be seen walking together with their parents in their campus?  How many of them have used bad language because it is the “in” thing among friends, yet the parents not the least suspecting?

It is not easy to be a disciple of Christ and it would never be easy, unless we submit our total being to the Lord and recognize that He is the Christ in our daily lives.  We should believe that we could be His disciples, no matter how hard it is to deal with the people in our midst, and heed Ezekiel’s call.  In Ezekiel 2, verses 3 – 4 and verse 7,  “He said: ‘Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; them and their fathers have been in revolt against me to this very day.  The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn.’ You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.”
