As Catholics, we are faced with the responsibility to share the promise of the Eternal Kingdom through our Lord, Jesus Christ. However, this task of evangelization is so commonly found difficult to be accomplished by many of us. Well, if the ‘in field’ task is arduous for us, probably we can join the ‘supporting troops’ for the harvesters of the Lord.

Recently, the Genesis Surabaya was blessed by the visit of Father Vincent Lee from Singapore. Fr. Vincent has been a priest for 18 years and has been conducting retreats all around the world for about six years. He shared a very inspiring talk about Intercession.

Intercession, basically means the act of interceding; mediation, pleading, or prayer in behalf of another or others. It is inspired by many chapters in the Old Testament wherein God was about to punish a group of people. However, due to their deep pledge for repentance, God spared their lives.

Fr. Vincent's group in Singapore has been conducting intercession for the past six years, especially for those who are working to spread the Word of the Lord. The prayers support the work, so that more and more people will be touched by the Holy Spirit and more and more conversions will result.

How should an intercession be done? Fr. Vincent  emphasized that the method is not of major importance. However, praying from the  heart is the key to being ‘heard’ by the Lord. As illustrated by Fr. Vincent, imagine yourself being sentenced by the doctor to have only three more months to live, you will surely kneel down on your knees and heartily pray to God to spare your life. This is the manner of prayer expected in  intercession. Deep and sincere pleading and pledging to God to answer the prayer. Fr. Vincent suggested to start with a simple recitation  of the Rosary or any other available prayers. The group may later form their own method of intercession gradually. To start an intercession group, nonetheless requires commitments and sacrifices from the members. Give time for God and fast to purify yourself before starting the prayers. As Fr. Vincent said, “Go a step farther, go a level deeper.”

The main purpose of his group's intercession is for more conversion to Christianity. It is undoubtedly a form of evangelization. He shared about the intercession group in South Korea, which began nineteen years ago and  there are  more than 40,000 conversions a year in Korea. This is one of the largest number of conversion in a country in the world. Praise the Lord!

However, the theme can also be diverse as required by circumstances, such as intercession for the peace of our respective countries or simply for a successful seminar. As he was standing in front of the Genesis Community, his group was praying for him, so that the Holy Spirit will touch him during the talk, and he may be able to deliver the message to the participants.

Many participants of the intercession group find joy and enlightenment after a session. “For the Lamb who stands in front of the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to the springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away all their tears” (Revelation 7:17).

Brothers and sisters in Christ, may the sharing by Fr. Vincent inspire us to start forming our own intercession group. Pray from the heart! Let the Lord hear our prayers and let Him be praised more and more! God bless you.
