BECAUSE HE SAYS SO
By Philip Yuson

“And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But because you say so, I will let down the nets." Luke 5:5

We all know this story.  Simon and his business partners were fishing the whole morning and they did not have any catch. Jesus got in their boat and told them to cast off to the deep and to drop the net. Being an experienced fisherman, Simon Peter knew that there was no fish. But because Jesus said so, Simon obeyed. And to his surprise, they caught a lot of fish that the nets began to tear.  This was something beyond his wildest dreams.

Very often, the Lord leads us to situations that will require radical trust in Him. This means that humanly speaking, what He is asking us to do will be impossible or fruitless.

Yet, it is in obeying the Lord's commands that we see miracles.

In Simon's case, he had a choice to argue with Jesus and tell Jesus that Jesus should just stick to carpentry and leave the fishing to an experienced fisherman like him. Or his other option was to obey.  As we see, Simon Peter obeyed and was surprised at what happened.

In our daily lives, the Lord always gives us two choices. To argue with Him based on facts and our abilities - or to obey, trusting in Him.

Yes, it is true He gave us skills to use. God does not want us to be unthinking robots that obey His every command. He wants us to be men and women who are free to make decisions. He wants us to make a decision to submit our will to His.

This is very difficult - because we have been trained to use our faculties.  There is an in-born desire within us to do what we think is best. Yet, if we do what we think is best, we end up on the losing end.

So when the Lord comes and tells us to do something that defies logic and reason - what would be our response? Will we argue with the Lord - telling Him that it is impossible? Or will we humbly obey the Lord for the simple reason - He said so.

I believe that God will not always give us what we ask for. Sometimes we do. Sometimes we don't. The reason is simple - because we ask too little from Him. We underestimate our great and mighty God!

What is the Lord telling you to do? Is it something that seems impossible? Obey the Lord and see what happens - it will be beyond your wildest dreams.

When that happens, send me a note, let me know what the Lord has done for you.
