GIVING GLORY TO GOD
By Bro. Pete Lapid

During our Prayer Meetings for the past two Fridays, the Lord has been calling on the Community to give glory to Him.

“Give glory to My Name. Give glory to My Name. For this is what I created you for. To give glory to My Name.” (January 17)

“I want you to give glory to My Name. I want you to give praise to My Name. For this is why I created you. Give glory to My Name.” (January 24)

And what better way to give glory to God than to obey His commandments.

“This is love: to walk according to His commandments.” (2 John 1:6) and “His commandments are not a burden.” (1 John 5:3). His commandments are truth and they give life. “If you want to enter eternal life, keep the commandments.” (Matthew 19:17)

And what are these commandments? In Mark 12:30 Jesus gives us the two great commandments: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”.

Our relationships with God and with our neighbor are reflected on the Cross - one of the powerful symbols of our Christian faith. The Cross, as we see it, is made up of two lines or axis. The horizontal line represents our relationship with God. The vertical line represents our relationship with our neighbor, the people around us.

Love for God. Love for others. Two equally important commandments of God to get us to Heaven, our real home. This is what the life of a Christian is about. This is what our life is about. And we need to strengthen, nurture and cultivate these two relationships in order for us to grow in holiness.

“If you say, ‘I love God,’ while you hate your brother or sister, you are a liar. How can you love God whom you do not see, if you do not love your brother whom you see?” (1 John 4:20)

At times we may find it difficult to obey. But this is what God wants from us. If we love God, we have to heed and obey His commandments. And yet, God is not asking us to do great or heroic or superhuman things in order to show our love and obedience to Him (although some people may be called upon to do this).

We can do this even in simple things. Like giving a kind word to someone or giving way to another car or to pedestrians to cross the street. Or a phone call, an SMS or an e-mail to an old friend just to let them know they are remembered. A prayer uttered for someone you meet on the road or a “warm hello” to your parish priest. A glass of cold water to the garbage collector or the postman to show your appreciation. A “Thank You” to the cashier at the supermarket or shopping mall or a ride home to an officemate especially when it is raining. Or getting off your car to help an old lady or a blind man cross the street or even saluting a traffic policeman for a job well done.

Simple gestures of love, appreciation and respect for others. Yet, these are expressions of our love for God, obeying His commandments and giving glory to Him. As Christians, we ought to outdo each other in service and love.

“Whoever keeps His commands remain in God and God in him.” (1 John 3:24). Let us therefore keep and obey His commandments so that we may remain in Him and He in us. And give glory to His Name!

TELL US LIKE IT IS!
Has something wonderful and unique happened in your life lately? Did God answer your prayer in a very unexpected way? Did you, like Isaiah, meet God’s whisper?
Have you felt His powerful hand working in your life recently?
Everyday, people are experiencing God’s mighty Word in their lives and it is a pity that very few know about it. Do you have a story to tell? Some Good News to share?
E-mail us (genesis@catholic.org) or fax us (021-6627384), and tell us about it. That’s right! You don’t have to be a great writer to do this. We can help you write it – just tell us like it is!
Don’t forget to write the subject: “Let Me Tell You A Story”
