- Nourishment of Body and Spirit - Whenever
we read or hear these words, what normally would come to our mind is
the Holy Mass. And rightly so, because in truth the Lord feeds us in
body and spirit with His Body and Blood and with His Words in the
Eucharist. As Catholics we believe that this is the principal means by
which the Lord nourishes us. And this is the reason why we are
encouraged to actively participate in the celebration of the Eucharist
as often as we can - not just once a week or every Sunday.
-
- While
it is true that the Lord is the One who sustains us, I believe that we
can cooperate with Him so that He may also nourish us through other
means. Here I’d like to mention two ways. First is the Sacrament
of Reconciliation. Through this Sacrament, we receive forgiveness
for our sins from our merciful God. After having gone through a
well-prepared Confession and true repentance, we become very clean
spiritually. In a sense we become empty of worldly attachments and
those things not pleasing to God. So the more we go to Confession, the
more we become clean and empty. And the more we become clean and
empty, the more can the Lord fill us with the graces we need to live
lives pleasing to Him. That is why it is to our benefit that we go to
Confession as often as possible - because by doing so we allow the
Lord to lead us to holiness.
-
- The
other means I’d like to mention here (which I think is a weakness
for many of us Catholics) is reading
- meaning reading books, magazines and other publications (in addition
to the Holy Bible) that can help deepen our faith. It is a very sad
fact that most of us would read
only those materials that interest or entertain us. If the Bible,
God’s Holy Word, does not interest us, then how could any other
religious publication do so? Not even Kerygma even if it is the
biggest and most widely circulated Catholic magazine in the
Philippines.
-
- In
computer jargon, there is a saying “Garbage in, garbage out.” This
is also very true in our lives. If we feed our body and spirit with
garbage or filth, what will come out will certainly be filth. Let us
therefore (as the Bible says) “fill our minds with the things of
Heaven.” Let us feed ourselves with heavenly things and participate
with the Lord in nourishing us into a deeper relationship with Him. I
encourage you to begin by reading the book Catechism of the Catholic
Church and know more about our Catholic faith. Also read about the
lives of saints and be inspired by them.
-
- May
the Author and Perfecter of our faith feed us with every spiritual
blessing to help us grow more and more in holiness until we see Him
face to face in our real home in Heaven.
