Vocation - By Bro. Pete Lapid
Last September 10, 2001 was the first year anniversary of my vow to live celibate for the Lord. This simply means that I have made a voluntary decision to live single for the rest of my life so that I can be more available for His service.

1 Corinthians Chapter 7 verse 32 says, “He who is not married is concerned about the things of the Lord and how to please the Lord.” (In contrast verse 33 says, “While he who is married is taken up with the things of the world and how to please his wife, and he is divided in his interests.”) I believe this is my calling, my vocation. And I praise and thank the Lord for this special grace.

Vocation comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means a calling. Each one of us has a calling or a vocation. Some people say their vocation is to be a teacher, a doctor, an accountant or an engineer. Others say their vocation is to be a housewife or a mother or father. True these are all vocations. But these are what we may call “mini” vocations. And these “mini” vocations, whatever they may be and wherever we may be, should lead us to our main vocation, our real calling.

Our real vocation as Christians is found in 1 Peter 1:15-16 which says, “Imitate the one who called you. As He is holy so you, too, be holy in all your conduct, since Scripture says: Be holy for I am holy.” Our real calling therefore is: the call to holiness.

How then can we live holy lives? St. Paul gives us some guidelines for holy living in Colossians Chapter 3:
1)     Set your mind on the things that are above, not on earthly things.
2)     Put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature: immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed which is idolatry.
3)     Rid yourselves of anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
4)     Do not lie to one another.
5)     Put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience to bear with one another and forgive whenever there is any occasion to do so.
6)     Let the Word of God dwell in you in all its richness.
7)     With thankful hearts sing to God psalms, hymns and spontaneous praise.
8)     And whatever you do or say, do it in the Name of Jesus, the Lord, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Hebrews 12:14 says, “ Strive to be holy, for without holiness no one will see the Lord.” Brothers & Sisters, let us therefore persevere to live holy lives and pray that all our “mini” vocations will lead us to our real vocation so that we may see the Lord face to face when the appointed day comes.
