Fr. Harry Toledano, OADLENT... A WALK WITH JESUS
By Fr. Harry Toledano, OAD

LENT is a forty-day walk with Jesus towards His glorious Resurrection. This journey is full of struggles, temptations, pains, sorrows and even death. In these forty days, the Church helps each Christian soul to progress in holiness of life, accepting the difficulties of life through, with, for and in Christ.

Meditating on the temptation, passion and death of Jesus, we are challenged to face with Him life’s trials and share with Him our weaknesses. We also would come to realize the great love of the Father, sending His only Begotten Son for us, to take and share our human nature.

During this season, Christ once again wants to console and confirm to us that He is indeed the Emmanuel – God with us. He is with us, no matter what it would cost Him. Even if it would risk Him His Divinity – He was in fact, all like us but sin assuming for Himself our humanity.

With our observance of fasting, abstinence and mortification, we are led by the Spirit of God (the same Holy Spirit that Christ will give on His Resurrection) to overcome the passions of our flesh or of every vice, to raise our minds and hearts to spiritual, heavenly and eternal beauty, and to progress in virtues.

Lent is a great season of Reconciliation. It is by sin that we turn away from God, from our neighbors and from ourselves. And it brought us to slavery, death and darkness. But it is by the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord that we are restored to the life of grace and gain our freedom as children of God and of the Light. This reconciliation in Christ is made visible through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.

The Church invites us to experience tangibly the healing power of this sacrament to our soul from the wounds of sin and the peace it brings. So that once again, we are at peace with God, with others and with ourselves. St. Augustine says, “Going away from God made us ugly and old, but returning to Him we become beautiful and new.”

What does this Lenten journey promise?
Death to sin and new life in God
Freedom from the slavery of sin
Humanity is raised to divinity
Light from darkness
New sight from blindness
From being an enemy restored to the dignity of a child of God.

Lent… a walk with Jesus. You might not see Him before you but He could be beside you, at your back or He might be carrying you.

Happy trip to Easter!
