The
year is almost at an end and everyone seems to be rushing to make
preparations for the long holiday, with the Muslim Lebaran just a week
away from Christmas. For
most of our Filipino members, it’s homecoming time once again, as
they celebrate this most symbolic and festive season with their
families. But for  those
members left in Jakarta, the Yuletide fever is just as strong.
There
was only one prayer meeting for the entire month, so December 7 was
not only celebrated with our usual First Friday Mass (given by Fr.
Binzler), but was also designated as the Christmas Party for the
Community. Thanks of
course to the ever-reliable members of Bro. Larry and Sis. Joji
Escuban’s Care Group for putting the pieces together to make one big
party - - organizing the food and games, preparing the program,
coordinating the presentations, decorating the hall, etc.
The emcees for the evening were Bro. Armand Sol and Sis. Sharon
Esguerra. While everyone rushed the whole week looking for the best
bargains for gifts, the Care Group of Bro. Larry and Bro. Martin
Wijaya managed to come up with a surprise dance numbers. The Sons of
David CG got everyone cheering as they danced to the tune of “You
Rock My World” complete with their Michael Jackson look-alike as
choreographer. The kids from our Children Ministry also gave different
interpretations for a medley of Christmas songs.
The
season of Advent is also a time of reconciliation and reflection.
So to prepare Community members for the coming of our Savior,
confessions were heard by Fr. Binzler last December 12 at Jl. Bacang,
followed by a Mass.
Last
December 19, at the invitation of Ibu Christine and Dhany, Community
members paid tribute to Pak Sugiono in commemoration of his 40 days
death memorial at their residence in Pondok Indah.
Despite
the domestic challenges faced by members left in Jakarta while
household helps went on Lebaran holidays, choir practices pushed
through for the special Christmas Masses.
The Genesis Choir, with some temporary members joining in, sang
Filipino Christmas songs on December 24 for the Christmas Eve Mass or
“Simbang Gabi” organized
by the Philippine Embassy. For
Filipinos who celebrated Christmas in Jakarta, this is the closest
they could get to feeling the Christmas spirit and remembering the
night of the birth of our Lord. The
choir also sang at the Papal Nunciature and at Atma Jaya on Christmas
morning.
And
of course, the season will not be complete without the usual “salo-salos”
or get-togethers- - Dec. 16th at the house of Bro. Frank
and Sis. Pinky Brosas, Dec. 24th in Bro. Ricky and Sis.
Carol Bautista’s house, and on Christmas Day at Sis. Nenette
Dizon’s house. And not
to be missed out is the simple birthday celebration at our house of
our eldest son Christian, who turned five last Dec. 29th.
Bro.
Pete gathered some former Genesis members who are now living in Manila
for a small reunion in his own home in Paranaque, Philippines. Those
who attended were Genesis "mentors" like Bro. Omy & Sis.
Rosanne Romero, Bro. Bo and wife Sis. Marowe, and Genesis Surabaya's
own head servant, Bro. Ramon Martillano. Pictures of the said reunion
will be published next issue.
