BISHOP PLEADS FOR RETURN TO BASICS O F FAITH

LONDON - An increasing number of Catholics have fallen away from Sunday Mass and regular Confession, says Shrewsbury's Bishop Brian Noble.

In a pastoral letter to be read throughout the diocese this weekend, Bishop Noble calls for every parish to reflect on the Gospel message.

Bishop Noble says there can be no substitute for attending Mass every Sunday. "It is here that we express our identity as the Church, the Body of Christ," he writes. "It is here that we can meet Christ in the Scriptures and in the breaking of bread; and here that our commitment can be renewed and strengthened."

ITALIAN PRELATE ON EASING PAIN OF DYING

VATICAN CITY - While Italian legislators debate a new legislative effort to regulate end-of-life medical care,  Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi of  Genoa has issued an emphatic reminder that the Church does not oppose the use of  pain-relieving drugs for patients suffering terminal illnesses.

Cardinal Tettamanzi made his comments during a public discussion with Flores D'Arcais, a philosophy professor; their remarks were published in the magazine MicroMega.

The cardinal argued that euthanasia is always immoral, and that doctors should focus their attention on relieving the suffering of patients. He cautioned, however, the drugs must be used to ease pain, not deliberately to end the patient's life.
